Looking for a reliable kids tablet in Kenya that is built around entertainment, learning and parental control rather than simply giving a child an unrestricted smartphone-sized screen? The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Tablet is one of Amazon's tablets specifically designed around younger users.
With its larger 8-inch HD display, compact design, kid-focused software experience and protective Kids accessories, the Fire HD 8 Kids is designed for children who need a tablet for watching educational content, reading, listening to music, playing age-appropriate games and exploring digital content under parental supervision.
The Fire HD 8 platform combines an 8-inch 1280 x 800 IPS touchscreen, a hexa-core processor, expandable storage and Fire OS. Depending on the exact configuration available, the 2024 Fire HD 8 comes with 3GB or 4GB RAM and 32GB or 64GB internal storage, with microSD expansion supporting up to 1TB.
If you're searching for an Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Tablet in Nairobi, Kenya, XS Discounts provides access to this popular Amazon tablet with delivery options available in Nairobi and across Kenya, subject to location and stock.
The 8-inch IPS display gives children considerably more screen space than a small 7-inch tablet while remaining compact enough to hold comfortably.
With a 1280 x 800 resolution, the screen is suitable for:
The 16:10-style screen is particularly useful for video content and reading because it provides a reasonable balance between viewing area and portability.
This is an HD tablet, not a premium high-resolution tablet. The display is perfectly usable for children's entertainment and learning, but don't buy it expecting the sharpness or contrast of a premium Samsung, iPad or high-end OLED display.
For a child-focused tablet, however, the 8-inch size is a sensible middle ground.
The Fire HD 8 Kids is designed around younger users rather than simply being a standard tablet with a colourful marketing label.
The Kids package is designed to provide additional protection and child-focused functionality, including a protective case designed to help handle the inevitable bumps, drops and knocks that come with children using electronics.
Amazon specifically states that the Fire HD 8 Kids is intended for children aged 3 years and above. The tablet and included accessories are not toys, and Amazon recommends appropriate supervision and checking the device for damage.
The protective design makes it much more suitable for children than handing a child an unprotected conventional tablet.
One of the biggest reasons to consider the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Tablet is parental control.
Parents can manage how the tablet is used instead of simply handing a child unrestricted access to a device.
Depending on the Kids configuration and software services available, parental features can include tools for:
This makes the Fire HD 8 Kids particularly useful for parents who want technology to become part of a child's learning and entertainment routine without turning the tablet into a completely uncontrolled device.
A cheap generic tablet can give you a screen.
The Fire HD 8 Kids is trying to give you a managed children's tablet experience.
That distinction is important.
The 2024 Fire HD 8 uses a MediaTek MT8169A hexa-core processor running at up to 2.0GHz, paired with either 3GB or 4GB RAM, depending on configuration.
This hardware is suitable for normal children's tablet activities such as:
The additional RAM on newer configurations also gives the tablet more breathing room when moving between applications.
Don't mistake "faster" for "gaming tablet."
The Fire HD 8 Kids is not designed to compete with dedicated gaming tablets or premium iPads and Galaxy Tabs.
It is built for normal everyday use by children.
For cartoons, learning apps, reading, music and casual games, it makes sense.
For demanding 3D games, heavy multitasking or someone looking for desktop-class performance, look elsewhere.
The current Fire HD 8 platform is available with 32GB or 64GB internal storage, depending on configuration. It also supports microSD cards up to 1TB, giving parents the option to expand storage when the internal space starts filling up.
That expandable storage is a major advantage for a children's tablet.
Kids can accumulate:
If the tablet will mainly be used online and you don't expect to store a lot of downloaded content, the smaller storage option can be adequate.
If you want more breathing room for apps, games, books and offline entertainment, 64GB is the more comfortable choice.
The microSD expansion option also means you don't necessarily have to replace the tablet simply because storage becomes tight.
Amazon rates the 2024 Fire HD 8 for up to 13 hours of battery life, although real-world battery life will depend heavily on brightness, Wi-Fi usage, streaming, gaming and other activities.
For parents, this means the tablet is capable of handling substantial periods of:
"Up to 13 hours" doesn't mean your child will automatically get 13 hours every day.
Streaming video, high brightness and demanding applications can reduce battery life considerably.
Still, the Fire HD 8 has enough battery capacity to make it practical as an everyday children's entertainment and learning device.
The 2024 Fire HD 8 features a 5MP rear camera and 2MP front camera.
These cameras can be useful for:
The cameras are functional, not spectacular.
If you're buying this tablet because your child needs a tablet for video calls, basic photos and learning activities, they're fine.
If you're expecting smartphone-level photography, this isn't that device.
The Fire HD 8 runs Amazon Fire OS 8, with Amazon identifying the underlying platform as Android 11/API level 30.
The software experience is heavily integrated with Amazon's ecosystem and services.
That makes the tablet particularly appealing for people already using Amazon services and children's content.
However, this is also one of the biggest things you need to understand before buying.
Fire OS is not the same experience as a conventional Samsung Android tablet.
App availability and the overall software experience can differ from standard Android tablets.
So if you are buying specifically because you expect the full Google Android experience, check the exact apps you need before purchasing.
The Fire HD 8 supports dual-band Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks and Bluetooth 5.2 LE.
This allows the tablet to connect to:
This is primarily a Wi-Fi tablet.
Do not buy the Fire HD 8 Kids expecting it to function like a 4G smartphone with a SIM card and mobile-data connection.
For internet access away from Wi-Fi, you'll need a suitable hotspot or other compatible connection.
The Fire HD 8 uses a USB-C connection, giving you the convenience of the modern USB-C standard.
USB-C is useful because it is widely used across modern phones, tablets, chargers and accessories.
It also makes charging and cable replacement more convenient than older proprietary charging connections.
Let's remove the marketing smoke.
1. Excellent size for children
The 8-inch display gives you more usable screen space than a tiny children's tablet without becoming a huge device.
2. Strong parental-control focus
This is arguably the biggest reason to choose the Kids version.
3. Protective design
Children drop things. Frequently.
The Kids package is built with that reality in mind.
4. Expandable storage
microSD support up to 1TB gives you plenty of flexibility for additional storage.
5. Good battery endurance
Up to 13 hours is useful for an everyday family tablet, although actual results vary with usage.
6. Good everyday performance
The hexa-core processor and newer RAM configurations provide enough performance for normal children's activities.
The Fire HD 8 Kids is a strong choice for parents looking for a tablet for:
It makes particularly good sense when parental control and child safety features are more important than having the most powerful processor or highest-resolution display.
